All Things From His Hand

One of the most difficult concepts for many Christians to embrace is the sovereignty of God. When one considers the ramifications of this doctrine, many grow cold, lose heart, or even become antagonistic. However, the way Scripture portrays God's sovereignty is that it is the occasion for joy and hope. In this psalm, we see this reality on full display, as Israel has just suffered a humiliating defeat in battle. Rather than shy away from it, the psalmist even says that it was God who crushed them in their affliction! Yet he does not remain here. He sees that though the hand of the Lord has crushed them, it will be this same hand that lifts them up, and thus, he hopes in God all the more.
