The Pitfall of Pride and Tribalism

The fundamental problem of the human heart is pride. It is the soil from which every other sin grows. In this passage, the disciples of Jesus begin debating who will be the greatest in the kingdom. Jesus just finished teaching on the nature of self-denial, yet these disciples are self-centered. Jesus, knowing what is in their hearts, understands this to be an issue of pride. This sermon explores the pitfall of pride. It is a great danger for the church and there are many lessons for how to identify it. Jesus then offers the only solution, which is true humility -- something He identifies as true greatness.
